WordPress Clone Themes

Submitted by • February 1, 2010 Website: www.themelab.com

There are a few themes which have been released as of late that mimic designs of popular websites such as Twitter, Facebook, etc. Should these themes be used and what are the possible ramifications of using such themes?

I think it's bad karma to be using a theme that clones the look of a popular website or service such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. Not to mention the possible legal ramifications if they exist.

I agree entirely. There's nothing wrong with using a popular site as inspiration but ripping it off entirely is a bit much.

If you were to rip off a famous web bloggers site design there would be a massive backlash from the design community, but for some reason nobody cares if it's Facebook or Twitter.

I think it's fun. I wouldn't use that kind of theme for anything "serious", but I think it's more fun than stealing, and, you know, "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" :)

It's similar to stealing a design, in my opinion. When you release it, sell it, profit off of it, that just makes it worse.

The comments here remind me the what was going on on wpchat last night lol

Same thing different location. But I must say, ripping a complete site is just pointless.. you will end up getting comments or emails saying that the your site looks identical to the source you ripped it off of. I remember there use to be galleries just to point out sites that were ripping other sites.
